Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT helps people understand the connection between their thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors, and make changes that can free them from unhelpful patterns in how they tend to think and respond in different situations.

CBT emphasizes that it is a person’s perception of events – rather than the events themselves – that determines how they will feel and act in response.

Some problems CBT can help with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety (including panic attacks and phobias)
  • Stress
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Low self-esteem

Some CBT techniques are:

  • Balancing negative, distorted thinking
  • Challenging beliefs
  • Relaxation and meditation exercises
  • Mindfulness
  • Changing behaviors to improve mood
