Life transitions, loss, and grief

Although significant changes in life can bring positive things, they can also lead to feelings of stress and loss, and can sometimes feel difficult to adjust to. Such changes may occur for younger adults who are starting or finishing school, moving out on their own for the first time, starting out in the workforce, developing a committed relationship, or having children. Later in life, career or financial changes, marital changes, children growing up, planning for retirement, changes to health, and the loss of friends or family can bring challenging transitions to life. Losses of different types can lead to feelings of grief, including the loss of a job, relationship, health-related losses, or the loss of important people in our lives.

Life transitions and losses can sometimes lead to changes in mood, changes in identity or self perception, and problems coping with day to day life.

Psychotherapy can help you get through and cope with the feelings of anxiety, stress, loss, and grief you are experiencing, so you can begin to enjoy life more.

Some common difficulties associated with loss and grief include:

  • Sadness and worry
  • Frustration and anger
  • Guilt
  • Loss of confidence
  • Tearfulness
  • Problems sleeping
  • Loss of appetite
